“You’re right, I don’t. But I do want to make it better.”
“I love you,” he whispered, “And I’m sorry I’m such a burden. The blight of humanity… I just can’t seem to get better.”
“I love you too, and you’re not.. you’re just… troubled. We all are.”
“I wish I wasn’t sometimes… but I just feel so much better in that state.”
“I just wish we were enough.”
“I wish you were too,” he sighed and put his hand over his face, “I wish I could fucking learn, but I can’t-“
“You’re right, I don’t. But I do want to make it better.”
“I love you,” he whispered, “And I’m sorry I’m such a burden. The blight of humanity… I just can’t seem to get better.”

“A little while,” he chuckled and rubbed her back, “And I come out like I’m Normal-Man from fucking Normaltown, Normania. Who watches golf for fun.”
“What’s wrong with being normal? Do you know how often I’ve wished for that? Hell, sometimes I wished I had your life.”
“Being normal doesn’t give you any character. Not saying that I’m proud of being fucked up, but… it opens your mind. You can see things, guess things, that other people could never understand.” He looked up from her shoulder, “You don’t want my life. Not right now, anyway.”
Hem hugged her back, giving a small sigh. His face burrowed into her shoulder slightly as if he had been without her for eternity.
“If I do end up being sent away, what’s going to happen to Charlotte?”
He already knew.
Shelby didn’t know how to respond to that. She wasn’t capable of taking care of a child, and…
“… It would just be for a little while.”
“A little while,” he chuckled and rubbed her back, “And I come out like I’m Normal-Man from fucking Normaltown, Normania. Who watches golf for fun.”
She looked at him for a long time, shaking her head. “Of course I’m sick of it. I’m angry as hell, but nothing I do is going to change anything, is it? Being angry at you and hitting you isn’t going to make you stop. I’m not going to make you stop. I’m not good enough. Apparently Charlotte’s not good enough either. What do we have to do? Just tell me, so we can fucking— fucking fix you.”
“I don’t know,” he faced forward again. His eyes searched the ground as if it held the answer, but he just shrugged when nothing came up. “Send me away? That’s what Chad was going to do.” he sniffled and pushed his hair back.
“We might have to.” Shelby looked at him tiredly before stepping forward and hugging him, kissing his cheek. “I don’t want to send you away. I’d give anything to just keep you here. But… we might have to.”
Hem hugged her back, giving a small sigh. His face burrowed into her shoulder slightly as if he had been without her for eternity.
